West Dapto Housing Development a Step Closer - (10 Oct 13)

Planning approval recently secured for the construction of a $210 million water and wastewater network.

Work on the Illawarra region’s largest housing development site, the West Dapto Urban Release Area (WDURA), is progressing with planning approval recently secured for the construction of a $210 million water and wastewater network.

Recently approved by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, the infrastructure will service WDURA as well as adjoining developments with the capacity to accommodate more than 30,000  homes.  NSW Planning  Department Approvals Executive Director, Chris Wilson, said the approvals were a crucial step towards meeting the Illawarra’s future housing needs. “The areas approved for servicing cover more than 5000 hectares – with scope for 30,000 dwellings in existing and future development areas over the next 40-plus years” he said. “Providing the water and wastewater services to the area will deliver 7000 new houses in the first stages of West Dapto as part of the Government’s commitment to housing the Illawarra’s growing population over coming decades.

The milestone was the fifth step in an eight-step process which began with Sydney Water’s submission of a Preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) in 2009 and will culminate with construction beginning in 2014, and conducted in stages up until 2048.  Urban Development Institute of Australia Chief Executive Stephen Albin welcomed the milestone and said “The plans for housing delivery in West Dapto are welcome by industry and show government is working to deliver on its commitment to provide more housing to the region”.
